Alcester Out & About
We’re very fortunate to be based in a beautiful part of the country; right in the heart of England in Shakespeare country. The Helping Hands office, where the induction week training is held, is based in Alcester in south-west Warwickshire about 8 miles (11 km) from world famous Stratford-upon-Avon. Alcester has a population of around 9000 people and, we’re pleased to say, is far less busy and commercialised than our more famous neighbour. An ancient Roman settlement dating back nearly 2000 years, there are many archaeological sites of interest in and around the town. In fact Alcester is one of the most investigated Roman towns in the country, with over 100 archaeological digs in the last 80 years.
Out and about
As you stroll down the old high street, you’ll see preserved Tudor cottages and other historical buildings that will take you back in time. For such a small town, Alcester has a surprising number of pubs, restaurants and takeaways to keep you busy in the evenings. There are also a number of hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts should you want to extend your stay in the area and see some of the local sights.
As well as a post office (useful if you forget to bring passport photographs – see our checklist), there are a number of banks including Barclay’s, LloydsTSB, Halifax and HSBC in town. We also have a library, where you can access the internet and check your emails during your stay – you need to be a member, but we can provide you with a letter for temporary membership.
