Caring for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an auto-immune condition in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system. MS affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. Whilst having Multiple Sclerosis is life-changing, a Live-in Care provider with the proper training can help minimise the disruption of life’s routines by providing the necessary levels of care at home.

The individual attention afforded by Helping Hands Live-In Care allows the Carer to recognise and adapt to the diverse range of symptoms and stages that MS may bring on. Our Live-in Carers are trained to appreciate the plateaus, improvements and remissions that every individual may experience, and to understand the different time scales involved.

Live-In Care for MS is positive because…

  • Personal Care is provided as and when it is needed, tailored to the preferences, needs and choices of your individual situation to a level that makes you feel comfortable.
  • Care at home is responsive and can adapt as needs change, supporting complex medication regimes by reminding and prompting.
  • A Live-in Carer provides emotional support, remains positive and motivates their client as well as promoting independence and restoring confidence.
  • The personal care assistant can help maintain existing social and support networks.
  • Live-in Care recognizes that diet and exercise are important when supporting MS and can provide correct regular nutrition, and support physiotherapy exercise plans.
  • Helping Hands Live-in Carers receive specialist training to help them understand the complexities of this condition.

Multiple Sclerosis and the comforts of home

  • All the comforts of home without having to worry about the practicalities of cooking, cleaning, shopping and laundry, with pets and loved ones nearby.
  • There is an audience of one – things will be done the way you want them.
  • No upheaval and no disturbance of routine.
  • Living at home promotes independence and motivates the spirit.

Dealing with MS and personal care

  • Living with MS may require help with personal care issues. A Live-in Carer from Helping Hands can provide full assistance with sensitive personal care needs such as toileting, continence care, washing and bathing.
  • Your personal care assistant is there to help with getting in and out of bed, and can work with other agencies including District Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Counsellors and Psychologists, if additional help is needed.
