My adventure with Helping Hands started with my Mum who suggested that is something I should try. She has been working as a Live-in carer for about two years with Helping Hands and was very happy with them and her placements. My Mum was also the one who saw me caring for my grandmother and my godfather and thus thought I would be perfect for this kind of job. Last summer I decided to give it a try, the training was absolutely fantastic. I was very impressed not only by the passion the trainers had but also by the knowledge they possessed. No question was left unanswered. I was very surprised when I discovered that Helping Hands had found me a placement right after I finished the training…..the next day! As I looked at the profiles of my hypothetical customers (yes, it was a couple) I felt the matching process the Helping Hands staff was talking in training wasn’t just empty words. And then it came – my first day at my first placement. To be honest – I was petrified. But I was taking over from a wonderful Hungarian girl and she gave me an excellent handover which has proved invaluable. And so here I am, a live-in carer with a wonderful couple. It has been more than two weeks now and I still love it here. One of my customers has dementia but still remembers songs so we sing together (yesterday it was “Dancing In The Rain”), the other customer of my couple can be quite serious but her way of thanking me with a strong handshake as I help her to bed at the end of our day it what makes the jobs even more worthwhile.
