Training Matters

In response to the demand for suitably qualified and experienced carers, Helping Hands have set up their own training company, Training Matters, to manage and deliver the process internally. We train new and existing carers for four days, every week as well as driving through the NVQ target set by the Care Standards (Having 50% of the workforce trained to a NVQ standard by 2008). In June 2005 our facilities were recognized as an Official NVQ Assessment Centre, with this we also have mobile NVQ assessors who are able to observe carers in situ.

We also have an Additional Projects and Training Team who source and manage the Specialist Training. This has enabled us to offer the specific skills that the diversity of our service users require.

We are also recognized as a Warwickshire Quality Partnerships BILD Satellite Centre

The Training We Provide

All Helping Hands carers attend our intensive four day Induction Training programme at our Alcester Head Office. The topics covered include, Moving and Handling; Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, Safer Handling of Medication, Emergency First Aid, Principles of care, Role of the Care Worker, Needs of the Service User, Incontinence Care, Basic Infection Control and Abuse Awareness of Vulnerable Adults. Time is also then spent shadowing an experienced carer in a Service Users home.

Once the initial training is complete we then offer all carers the opportunity to undertake additional training so that they can increase their knowledge of caring for specific conditions. These include Dementia, Parkinsons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Learning Difficulties. A comprehensive list of our additional training for live-in carers is available to view.

Carer Checks

Helping Hands is a certified umbrella organisation within the Criminal Records Bureau and checks every potential carer before placing them with a client.

Every potential carer has to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check. (The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is an executive agency of the Home Office and provides access to criminal records and other information to organisations in England and Wales through a service called Disclosure. Its specific purpose is to help organisations make more informed decisions when recruiting people into positions of trust. Through the Disclosure service, organisations can provide greater protection for the vulnerable members of our society and offer greater protection to their customers, staff, volunteers and ultimately their organisation.

The CRB's Disclosure service provides access to a range of different types of information, including:

  • Information held on the Police National Computer (PNC), such as, convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings in England, Wales and those recorded from Scotland. There is also some Northern Ireland conviction data held on PNC
  • Information held by local police forces relating to relevant non-conviction information
  • Information from the Government's Protection of Children Act List (PoCA)
  • Information from the Government's Protection of Vulnerable Adults List (POVA)

An Ongoing Process..

Because Helping Hands directly employs all of its carers, the company assumes all of the employment responsibilities for our staff, including regular supervisions and annual appraisals. Helping Hands completes four supervisions a year, ensuring that the carer’s training is up to date. Periodically a client is asked to complete a carer feedback form rating their carer’s performance. We also undertake regular inhouse surveys.
