Caring for Dementia and Alzheimer's
It was 2007 when Sue Coombes decided that she needed more support for her mother, Barbara. They had for some time managed her Vascular Dementia as a family, however as her needs became more intense they turned to live-in care as a solution.
The most important thing for Sue is the peace of mind knowing that her mom is safe and comfortable, her main Carer Rosemary offers Barbara a huge amount of companionship as well as maintaining her personal care needs. Such is her love of Pembrokeshire they spend time reminiscing through old albums and talking about her beloved dogs as well as spending time in the garden.
Barbara is also rather keen of the hearty breakfasts Rosemary prepares for her! Such is the quality of the relationship Rosemary is viewed as an extension of the family, and has been her support through downturns in condition at hospital as well as quality times on short breaks – in Pembrokeshire of course!
Watch a short case study on how live-in care helped Sue and her mother Barbara.
Caring for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Jemma is one of the most extraordinary people we support. A young lady, who despite being born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a muscle wasting disease, is successfully teaching Maths in a secondary school in Essex. With the help of her Live-in Carer, Jurgita, Jemma is now fulfilling her dream by inspiring others in the classroom.
She explains, "I explain my condition to every class I meet and let them ask me any questions; I try to be as open as I can. In turn the pupils respect me and recognise that being disabled doesn’t make you incapable; just because your legs stop working doesn’t mean your brain does too. Jurgita helps me professionally with the physical classroom preparation and then supports me with my care needs and social life at home. We get on extremely well together, a pretty unbeatable team!"
Jemma's mum Sharon adds "I cannot stress how important Jurgita is to Jemma - Live-in Care is essential for Jemma's independence, safety and well-being, and as her mum, it gives me total peace of mind." Jemma’s story was published by The Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atrophy back in 2000, when she was just 16.
Respite Care – Helen & Dad
|
Helen juggles a young family, a job and the increasing care needs of her elderly dad; she pops in to see him 3 times a day, keeping him company, making sure he is comfortable, eating properly and taking his medication. Helen was concerned as she had a much needed holiday coming up and she worried about leaving her dad alone, even though it was just for a couple of weeks.
His needs aren’t complicated, but Helen felt better knowing that with Live-in Respite Care he had companionship and someone to take care of him, allowing her to really relax and make the most of her precious holiday. |
