Live-in care and visiting care in Colchester

With an ancient history stretching as far back as 2000 years, this Essex city was the first in the UK and former capital Roman Britain. Now known for its collection of wild animals at Colchester Zoo, its quaint villages and beautiful countryside, this charming place also boasts its own friendly team of Helping Hands carers.

From just 30 minutes per week, your Helping Hands carer can provide the support you need to continue living independently at home, whether that be the help of a companion getting around the shops and making meals or nursing care for complex conditions. With flexible packages, you are in control of the level of care you receive, from hourly visits to live-in care for full-time support.

Meet the team

Jacqueline Wilson

Meet Jacqueline Wilson, our Head of Live-in Care, Colchester

I have worked in Care since 2008. I was initially attracted to this sector as I knew that every day I would do something which would enrich someone’s life. I love working with people and I get great satisfaction and a sense of achievement knowing that my efforts however small or large have made a difference to an individual or their family. Knowing that I have enabled someone to stay in a cherished home to their last day is a powerful influence for me to want to do this job. Quite often in care, we meet clients and families who are at crisis point and it is immensely rewarding knowing that I have the ability and knowledge to offer a solution to a crisis and give peace of mind to the clients and families we support. Outside of work I enjoy going to the gym and Spin classes are a favourite of mine. I also enjoy Rugby and love the friendly rivalry and atmosphere you get from the live sport. I enjoy cooking and prior to my career change into care my husband and I owned our own Bakery and Tea Room. This is one of my proudest achievements but also one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. We had to close our business due to serious health issues my husband suffered, but I knew from the interaction from our customers, some very elderly, that kindness and support go a long way to make someone happy.

Visiting care across Colchester

Since 1989, we have been providing home care that puts our customers at the centre of their support, whether that’s weekly visits to help with the shopping or several daily calls to assist with personal care and administering medication.

With our expert carers that have a wealth of industry experience, we can offer care that covers a whole host of different conditions including Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis and many more. And with the support of a team of specialist clinical nurses, we can also provide home care for individuals who have more complex needs such as tracheostomies, PEG feeding tubes, catheters or stomas.

Above all, visiting care can often be a great source of companionship and a friendly face that you can learn to rely upon. As well as providing support for your practical needs, they could also be the link that allows you to keep in touch with the local community. You may even find yourself taking trips out with your private carer to the Firstsite Museum, Colchester Castle or over to Mersea Island.

Live-in care that caters to all of your needs

For those that require extra support with their health condition or everyday needs, live-in care could be an ideal solution for you that gives you the peace of mind you might be looking for. Suited to those who need more intensive care, this type of support allows you to retain as much independence as possible without having to leave your beloved home, which could otherwise be an incredibly distressing time.

Created with you in mind, our local team will work with you to carefully chose a carer suited to you, so that you can be fully-involved in the decision-making process. Ensuring that your carer has similar hobbies to you and a personality that suits you means that you can feel comfortable in welcoming this new person into your home and begin to build a rapport with them.

What’s more, they’ll be on hand whenever you need them to provide any assistance. So, if you’re bed-bound, a carer will be there to ensure that you’re moved and rolled regularly to prevent any pressure sores. Or if you need more medical assistance first thing in the morning, your carer can help you to administer your medication and perhaps take you out for the afternoon for a stroll along the banks of the River Colne for some fresh air.

Why choose Helping Hands over a care agency in Colchester

At Helping Hands we’re committed to providing our customers with the best care possible in their own homes, and we’ve been doing so since we were founded in 1989. We’ve never been an agency – since we began we’ve always been a private home care company who values our amazing carers highly. We support them anyway we can, so that they can give exemplary care to every one of our customers, every single day. Over the years we have grown as a company and we now have almost 150 branches across England and Wales, meaning there is bound to be a local care team near to you. Part of being a private company is that we don’t have hidden costs or referral fees either, as we consider finding you the perfect carer to be all part of the service.

Private care in Colchester

Helping Hands have over 30 years of experience as a private care provider to our customers in their own homes, so from the moment you first contact us you can be assured of the highest levels of service. Our care teams across England and Wales ensures that whatever region you are in, you’ll always be near to one of our expert local branches, meaning that whether you require visiting or live-in care, complex support or companionship, our compassionate carers will be a welcome addition to your home whenever they are with you. Our flexible packages of care mean that regardless of your needs, your routines and preferences will always be respected, and with a personalised support plan in your home at all times, your life day to day life will continue just as you want it to.

Domiciliary care to retain control of your care

We understand how important it is for you to have a say over when, where and how you receive your care, regardless of the condition you’re living with or your additional needs. Domiciliary care does just this; give you back control and provides a package of care created around you.

So, whether you think a loved one may need an extra pair of hands around the house or you’ve noticed that you could do with support with your toileting needs, we’ll arrange for a carer to swiftly step in and provide unintrusive, empathetic care that suits you.

Specialist support from our dementia care experts

A dementia diagnosis can be quite an unsettling and anxious time for both you and your loved ones alongside you. Regardless of whether you’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia or Pick’s disease, each type of dementia affects each individual in entirely different ways, which is why our trained specialists are taught the differences between each type of dementia and how it progresses, offering the best dementia care in the UK.

We can also help you to make your home ‘dementia friendly’ by helping you make slight adjustments which may make all the difference for your loved one. For example, you may have patterned flooring that your family member may not like walking on because it resembles flowers or water. Due to their visuospatial perception gradually worsening as their dementia progresses, this can distort their vision and reality. Small tweaks like changing the colour of the flooring or using a plain matt could really help with anxiety levels and overall wellbeing.

Elderly care to help you to stay at home

With the inevitability of ageing comes the possibility of more health and mobility problems. But if you do find yourself needing extra support with a progressive condition or with mobilising safely to and from the shops, elderly care from the Colchester team could enable you to retain your independence without the upheaval of moving into a nursing home.

Designed to fit around your routines and preferences, you can decide whether you receive support once a week or every other day if necessary, which can always change if you find yourself needing extra support with other tasks or personal care.

Take a break with respite care

Caring for a friend or loved one can be one of the most rewarding jobs there is but can be all-consuming. When you reach the point where you know that you need a break both physically and mentally, you can call on the respite care services of the Helping Hands team in Colchester to provide short-term care in your place.

Kimberley will meet with both of you before you take a break and make sure everything’s in place so that the transition of your care is smooth and hassle-free.

Award-winning care for our carers in Colchester

All of our carers, whether experienced in the care industry or not, are required to go through an intensive training programme that ensures they’re ready to support any of our customers in their homes. The award-winning programme covers practise with manual handling and hoisting, first aid, dementia care, safeguarding and much more. In addition to this, our carers go through strict background checks which include a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) screening and several character references, so that we are truly selecting the very best to bear the Helping Hands name.

Our Colchester branch, along with our other 100+ branches across the country is monitored closely by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who make sure we maintain our high standards and deliver a safe, effective and responsive service to all of our customers.
