Social butterfly: Katie’s story

New Milton customer Katie Frampton is a social butterfly. She loves keeping busy with hobbies such as swimming and horse-riding, but due to the recent lockdowns, Katie has missed them. We spoke with Katie to find out about how she’s been keeping her socialite status with the help of her Helping Hands support workers…

“I was introduced to Helping Hands through a friend that used to live in my supported living complex, and I’ve fallen in love with them! I love my Mondays and Fridays, they’re absolutely brilliant and it’s made a big difference. I’m eating properly, I’m sleeping better, and I also look forward to the days when you come in, I know things are going to get done and nothing is ever too much to ask.

“It has made a big difference having Helping Hands support workers in and having different people to talk to, I’m very much a people person so I’ve missed not having that many people.

“I’ve always been a very sociable person, and there’s so many activities I love to take part in, such as craft, swimming, horse-riding and pretty much anything to do with music so that I can have a dance!

“But over lockdown, I’ve really enjoyed cooking and learning new recipes; it’s been really nice. I’ve probably eaten the best that I’ve ever eaten because I’ve got someone else to show me; we’re doing different things all the time that I wouldn’t think of doing on my own. I’ve never even known how to make a cheese sauce, but now I do! It gives such an amazing sense of freedom knowing that if I want to make something, I can, because I’ve done so many new things with my support workers.

“And I actually feel like – I know this is going to sound really funny – but the home is a home now. Where I live doesn’t feel like a big building with Helping Hands, it feels like home, which is much nicer.”

A helping hand

Here at Helping Hands we provide bespoke support for young adults to enable you to live independently at home. We believe that support workers should be a companion, as well as someone to help with everyday tasks, which is why we match you with someone based on personality. Whether you’d like some visiting care to help you with cooking and cleaning around the home, or perhaps you’d benefit from full-time support whilst you attend university, whatever you need, young adult support with Helping Hands can empower you to live life to the fullest.
