How much does elderly care cost?
Since 1989, Helping Hands have been delivering transformative home care to people with a variety of needs, allowing them to live independently and comfortably at home.
One of the areas of home care in which we specialise is elderly care. Old age eventually catches up with even the best of us, so it’s inevitable that at some point you’ll find yourself needing a bit of extra help around the house. Certain tasks and routines will start to take a bit longer than they used to, and your body may struggle to cope physically with the demands of your lifestyle.

Paying for elderly care
Our Alzheimer’s home care offers you or your loved one full support and peace of mind.
Most of our customers pay for their care privately, but we do also accept direct payments if you’re eligible for funding. You can find out more about your funding options by getting in touch with our care advisers or through our website.
Because we’re a private care provider, rather than a care agency, we directly employ all our carers. This is beneficial for you because, unlike many agencies, there are no hidden costs or unexpected fees with Helping Hands – meaning that the costs outlined in your care plan will be what you pay.
Who pays for elderly care?
Most of our customers pay for their own care, but there are some exceptions to this.
In some instances, your local authority may contribute financially towards needs that fall into the bracket of social care, such as assistance with dressing or washing. Your eligibility for this funding is determined by both your financial situation and the severity of your condition. You can apply for this funding yourself by contacting your local authority, or your GP can refer you for a needs assessment.
Elderly care costs per week
Your weekly elderly care costs will vary depending on your personal needs.
At Helping Hands, we take pride in personalising every customer’s support to fit their unique circumstances, requirements and preferences, so the weekly cost of elderly care will vary from person to person depending on the type and level of care we’re providing.
Of course, should your care needs or budget ever change, we’ll be able to adapt your support accordingly so that you’re always getting the assistance you want.
Funding options
Depending on your or your loved one’s situation, you may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding to help you manage your elderly care costs. CHC funding is designated funding that is provided over a period of time to assist people with various conditions. It’s important to know that CHC funding is:
Needs assessed
Your eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare depends on your assessed needs, and not on any particular diagnosis or condition. If your needs change then your eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare may change.
For adults
NHS continuing healthcare is for adults. Children and young people may receive a “continuing care package” if they have needs arising from disability, accident or illness that cannot be met by existing universal or specialist services alone.
Subject to assessment
The initial checklist assessment for CHC funding is completed by a healthcare professional or social worker. After this, full assessments are undertaken by a team made up of a minimum of two professionals from different healthcare professions.
Fast-track support
If your health is deteriorating quickly and you’re nearing the end of your life, you should be considered for the NHS continuing healthcare fast-track pathway, so that an appropriate care and support package can be put in place as soon as possible – usually within 48 hours.
