Continence Care Plans

What is a continence care plan?

A continence care plan can offer support with your discreet and personal needs.

Carers UK describes continence care as the ability to control movements of the bowels and bladder. Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine, bowel incontinence is where you are unable to pass faeces in the intended way and both types is referred to as double incontinence. A continence care plan is tailored around you and can support your specific continence care needs, helping with changing and maintaining stoma bags, changing continence pads and cleaning intimate areas.

Why should I have a continence care plan?

If you are experiencing incontinence, a continence care plan could be for you.

Dealing with incontinence can be frustrating and upsetting. The NHS says that incontinence can occur for many reasons, including urinary tract infections, tweaking of the pelvic floor muscles and the urethral sphincter, obesity and increasing age. If you are experiencing incontinence, our care can help you get on top of it, implement ways of managing it and keep an eye on any decline. Our personal care can help with continence care including catheter and stoma care and general hygiene.

What should an effective continence care plan include?

Continence care should look after any incontinence problems such as urine and bowel incontinence.

    Catheter care

We can support catheters, which are tubes that are inserted into the bladder and allow urine to pass through into a drainage bag.

    Urostomy care

If you have had urostomy surgery and you require support, supervision or full assistance with the care of your urostomy, we can help.

    Urinary sheath

We can help you with your urinary sheath to help with any incontinence in a dignified and hygienic manner.

    Hygiene care

A carer can help with toileting, changing continence pads, cleaning intimate areas and your general hygiene.

    Bowel management

Our bowel management care covers medication management, through colostomy care where surgical intervention has taken place.

    Exercise

Pelvic floor exercises are beneficial to improve bladder control and strengthen the muscles which will improve your overall incontinence.

    Dietary habits

Decrease alcohol and caffeine drinks such as tea and coffee. These “can cause your kidneys to produce more urine and irritate the bladder.”

    Emotional well-being

Consistently reassure your loved one and encourage them to remain positive when to comes to getting to grips with their incontinence.
