Having ‘the talk’ on Mother’s Day
Consider help for Mum this Mother's Day
Mother's Day could be the perfect time to have a difficult conversation with Mum.
The excitement of Christmas has finally died down and Mother’s Day is here, providing a great opportunity to catch up with Mum and find out how she’s getting on. Has she started to slow down a little? Do you think she needs an extra pair of hands? Getting to grips with a parent’s future can be overwhelming and sometimes easily avoided, but starting the conversation about external support can be the first step to a better quality of life.
With 35 years’ experience and 150 branches across England and Wales, Helping Hands are perfectly placed to provide Mum with compassionate, person-centred support at home.
We've put together a digital guide to help you approach the subject of additional support with loved ones.

How can we help Mum around the home?
There’s a common misconception that turning to an external provider for support means the end of an independent way of life for a loved one, whereas in fact the very opposite is true. Even just a little bit of extra help throughout the week can do wonders for Mum’s independence, confidence and wellbeing. We find that it’s often the people who are initially the most reluctant to accept extra support who end up most appreciating the benefits it offers.
A support assistant can help in many ways, including:
Personal support
All of our assistants are trained to provide discreet, sensitive support with personal routines such as bathing, dressing, toileting and continence
Housework
If Mum is struggling to find the time or energy to stay on top of the housework, we can help out around the house with just about anything
Mobility support
Your mother’s assistant will be able to help her get into and out of bed and move around the home, as well as assisting with physio exercises
Friendly companionship
All of our team members are selectively recruited for their kind, compassionate personalities, and make for truly wonderful companions
Assistance with medication
From collecting it on your behalf to helping you administer it, our assistants are expertly trained to help you with your medication management
Looking after pets
If Mum has a dog whose collar is getting a little tight, an extra pair of hands can help her to look after her furry friend and continue enjoying their company
