"Home care has changed my life"
Meet Richard from Chorley in Lancashire. After suffering a stroke he was placed in unfamiliar surroundings, at hospital and then at a specialist unit. Now, with the help of live-in care from Helping Hands, he is back at home with his family. Read his story.
It was five years ago when Richard suffered a stroke while he was on holiday with his family. For a number of months afterwards he was receiving care in hospital, and was then later transferred to a specialist stroke care facility.
Richard’s daughter explained why the family came to contact Helping Hands. “His condition was not getting better and we knew that he was unhappy and something had to be done.
“Dad has always been such a lively bubbly person,” she added, “and seeing him confined to a wheelchair, in strange surroundings with people who were much older and frailer than he was – it broke our hearts.”
Choosing the right live-in support
Richard loved the idea of live-in stroke aftercare as he was desperate to return to the home he had shared with his wife, Joan, for 20 years. He did stipulate a few things though – the carer had to be bubbly, be able to “talk tennis”, and watch Wimbledon!
Richard and his stroke support worker now enjoy getting out and about. They go for coffee a few times a week, watch movies and, much to his family’s amazement, have even attended local tennis matches together.
With the aid and encouragement of his carer and weekly physiotherapy sessions, Richard is gradually building up his strength again.
Richard shared, “Home care has changed my life, before I had no hope and had given up on life, now I wake up with a purpose, full of plans for the day ahead.”
