Benefits of Overnight Care

The 9 Benefits of Overnight Care

Overnight care is sometimes necessary if you’re living with a complex condition, approaching the end of your life, or need regular assistance around the clock. Helping Hands offer two types of overnight care, sleeping nights and waking nights. Depending on your circumstances, you may just be happy to know that a live-in carer is nearby in case of an unexpected emergency, even though they sleep during the night as you don’t usually require their help. However, in some circumstances, carers are required to be working throughout the night, which means you would need a rotation of carers so that they are fully rested, or you have loved ones who are undertaking daytime caring duties. Occasional night calls are acceptable for live-in carers who are usually asleep, even if you don’t normally require it; however, if your care needs mean someone must be awake throughout the night with you, then waking night care would be necessary.

Immediate Assistance at Night

Having a carer in your home overnight will offer the highest levels of reassurance for both you and your loved ones. Whether there’s a risk of falling, a complex condition that means you can’t be left alone, or you’d just like to know you’re not alone at home, having immediate assistance on hand is very comforting.

Peace of Mind

Imagine that you feel unwell in the night – who do you call? With an overnight carer, you don’t have to worry about waiting for help; they’re already there! This isn’t just reassuring for you, it’s also peace of mind for your loved ones who may live some distance away and know that you don’t have to wait for them to arrive.

Improved Comfort

There’s no doubt that remaining in the comfort and familiarity of your own home for around-the-clock care is enormously beneficial to both your physical and emotional well-being. You’ll continue using your own furniture, looking out at familiar views and having family and pets beside you.

Supports Better Sleep

Knowing that a caregiver is in your home with you overnight can reduce levels of anxiety, which in turn can help you to sleep better. Many people don’t like being alone at home, especially overnight, as it leaves them feeling vulnerable. Having an overnight carer means that you can relax and get a better night’s sleep.

Managing Medications Made Easy

If you need to take medication around the clock, it can mean you don’t get any quality sleep as you’re anxiously watching the clock for your next dosage. However, if you have a carer managing your medication, you can sleep soundly, knowing that they’ll make sure your medication is administered at the correct time.

Battling Nighttime Anxiety

Whether you’ve always been an anxious sleeper, or it’s become worse since your condition has progressed, being alone at home can make many people’s anxiety worse. Knowing that there’s another person in the next room who’s fully trained for all eventualities will help you to manage your anxiety and rest easier.

Constant Monitoring to Detect Issues Early

Your carer will be working to your exact requirements, and if that’s being awake all night, that’s what they’ll do. They can constantly monitor your condition and make sure you receive the support you need when you need it, whether that’s medication, food and drink, continence care or any other aspects of your care.

Companionship & emotional support

You may be struggling to sleep at night since the passing of a loved one, finding the house to be too quiet and lacking the sound of another person nearby. Having a carer in your home doesn’t just offer support with the practical side of caring, they will also support you emotionally and make sure you have companionship when you need it.

Emergency assistance

We never want to think the worst, but if you were taken seriously ill in the night or had a fall, having someone in your home overnight means that help is only seconds away. If you were not expecting someone until the morning, you could be there for hours without assistance, meaning reassurance for both you and your loved ones.
