Mother’s Day activities for the elderly
Importance of Mother's Day for the elderly
Mother’s Day isn’t always about gifts and cards; it’s when we celebrate our mums and get to spend quality time with them.
As we grow older, it is easy to get lost in our day-to-day responsibilities and miss out on valuable time with our loved ones. That’s why days like Mother’s Day allow us to stop and celebrate our loved ones and in this case, our wonderful mums.
You don’t have to empty your bank to make the day special; there are plenty of affordable ways to make the day memorable. Here are a few ideas.
Activities for Mother's Day
Rattling your brain about what to do for your mum? Here are a few activities that are sure to make the day a memorable one.
Afternoon tea
Indulge your mum with a delicious afternoon tea. With freshly prepared sandwiches, cakes, scones and clotted cream, it’s always nice to have a catch-up over a cup of tea and treats. You can book your afternoon tea at a hotel or restaurant, but you’ll need to get in quickly! Alternatively, you can do one at home, giving it a personal touch.
Spa treatment
We all love a little pamper, so why not treat your mum to a spa day? You can choose from various Mother’s Day spa packages, and they are available at a good price. You can take a dip in the pool, sit in the steam room or relax in the sauna. Some packages even offer a treatment and meal too.
Get the family together
Get your family together and organise a meet-up. If some family members live far away, video call them so they don’t miss out. You can go through old pictures, reminisce about old times, or even play a board game – a great way to make memories.
Movie night
Whether you want to nip to the cinema or watch one of your mum’s favourite films at home, having a movie night is a great way to spend time with your mum. You can even throw in a movie hamper with popcorn, sweets, chocolates and all your mum’s favourite snacks.
Go for a picnic
Pack a picnic basket full of treats and venture outdoors. If the weather isn’t great, why not have an indoor picnic? Pull out your picnic mat, throw on some cushions and lay out all the tasty food. From luxurious sandwiches, salads and cakes, treat your mum to a picnic she will never forget.
Karaoke night
If your mum loves singing and dancing, take her out for a karaoke night. She can sing to her heart’s content and dance the night (or day) away! Whether she likes a bit of pop, rock or even dance, this activity is sure to be a winner.
Classes
Book a class with your mum. Whether that’s yoga, baking, chocolate making or wine tasting, there are plenty of classes to choose from. Not only will this give you the chance to spend time together, but it will also have a positive impact on your mum’s mental wellbeing.
Book a weekend away
If you want to really treat your mum, book a weekend away. You don’t have to go abroad, there are plenty of hidden gems to visit in he UK. Book a hotel or a B&B and get a chance to venture out together – a great way of spending quality time.
Benefits of Mother's Day activities for the elderly
Getting your mum involved in activities shows how much you value and appreciate her. Here's how spoiling your mum on Mother’s Day can make a difference.
Companionship
As we age, it is natural to feel lonely. Perhaps you don’t live close to your mum or don’t get to see her as often as you like, but taking out time on Mother’s Day gives your mum the companionship she needs. Just visiting her, especially on special occasions, can really brighten up their day.
Wellbeing
Carrying out activities always boosts your mental health. Whether that’s watching your mum’s favourite film for a movie night or playing a board game with the rest of the family, doing things your mum enjoys will immediately lift their mood.
Strengthens bond
There’s nothing like a mother and child relationship. The bond has always been there from day one, and getting involved with Mother’s Day activities is a great way to strengthen your bond and show your appreciation. Whether you decide to take your mum for brunch or a stroll around the park, spending quality time will always put a smile on her face.
