New Year, New Care with Helping Hands

Does someone in your family need extra support this New Year?

New Year, new you? 2025 could be the year you get extra support at home.

As the New Year begins, it’s a good time to check in on your family members and if they may need extra support in 2025. Your loved one may be showing changes in behaviour, and it might be time to start the conversation about their needs. Exploring different support options can make all the difference in helping them feel safe and cared for. Helping Hands can be there every step of the way with our expert home care. We can help form a daily routine for 2025 so your family can be looked after in the home you love.

Changes in daily habits

The New Year is the perfect time to look closely at daily habits and if they have changed.

Neglecting personal hygiene

If your loved one is skipping regular showers or wearing the same clothes for days, this may indicate they’re struggling with their self-care. Forgetting to brush their teeth or hair can also be a subtle sign.

Poor eating habits

Pay attention in the New Year to signs of a noticeable drop in appetite like a reliance on unhealthy snacks or expired food piling up in the fridge. This can suggest they may need help with nutrition.

Neglecting housework

Cluttered spaces, unwashed dishes, overflowing laundry, or general neglect of the home can show they’re finding daily chores overwhelming and may need extra support, such as mobility care.

Changes in sleep patterns

Changes in sleep hygiene such as sleeping too much, napping frequently during the day or struggling with insomnia may signal physical or emotional struggles that have been undetected.

Forgetting appointments

It’s important to keep up to date with your doctor’s appointments and medications. If your family member is often forgetting, or misplacing important items, this can be a sign of cognitive difficulties.

Reduced interest in hobbies of social life

Your loved one may be more reserved than usual and withdraw from enjoying their favourite hobbies. They may also avoid friends and family and show little motivation to leave the house.

Changes to mobility

Weight loss, frailty, or struggles with balance may indicate a decline in physical health.

Your loved one may show signs of physical decline over the winter months and the New Year is an opportunity to judge if they need further support. Signs to look out for include fatigue or frequent resting, difficulty with simple tasks like preparing food or tidying the home, and showing signs of decreased strength or coordination. Be ready to lend a hand during the New Year celebrations or arrange superb mobility care with help from Helping Hands. We can help form a daily routine that can include physio and light exercise to get on top of any mobility challenges.
