Cost of Palliative Care
The benefits of palliative care at home
At Helping Hands, we firmly believe that your home is the best place for palliative care.
In our 35 years of providing person-centred home care, we’ve found that our customers truly appreciate being able to remain in the home that they love while receiving empathetic palliative care. Staying at home means you can continue enjoying your normal routines, home comforts and familiar sights and sounds.
Here’s how you can benefit from palliative care at home:
Enjoy a familiar environment
Care at home allows you to spend your last months or weeks in the comfortable, familiar surroundings of your own much-loved home
Remain closer to loved ones
Staying at home means you’ll be able to set your own schedules, and spend more time seeing friends and family on your own terms
Receive one-to-one support
You’ll receive personal support from a dedicated, compassionate carer who will be completely familiar with your condition and circumstances
Cared for by specialists
All Helping Hands palliative carers receive palliative care training to deliver exceptional, compassionate support for people with a range of conditions
Personalised symptom relief
You’ll be provided with a palliative care plan that focuses specifically on your condition – whether that’s a type of dementia, cancer, or anything else
Peace of mind for the family
Palliative care provides peace of mind both for you and for your loved ones, which is something you simply can’t put a price on
Palliative care costs
We offer two types of palliative care at home: visiting care or live-in care, each having their own pricing structure. Your care plan and quote will be personalised to your specific needs.
With visiting care, a carer will come to your home at set points throughout the day or week to provide practical, physical and emotional support.
Prices start from £29.00 per hour
Visits lasting 30, 45 or 60 minutes
£4.25 call-out fee per visit
Live-in care involves having one of our wonderful, friendly carers live with you in your home and provide you with round-the-clock support and companionship.
Starting from £1,650 per week for a single person
£1,650 per week for a couple
Constant support from your local team
How a palliative carer can help at home
We’ve been supporting customers to remain in their own homes and receive the care they need since 1989, so you can be reassured that we really are the experts in home care provision. Whether you need visiting care from our local care teams or one of our carers to live in your home with you, they will provide you with the highest levels of care possible and be a welcome friend to you and your loved ones. We also have our own team of highly qualified and experienced clinical nurses who can support with more complex needs.
Your carer can help around the home with:
Personal care
Your carer can support with intimate personal care routines like toilet trips, bathing and getting dressed, as well as helping you manage a stoma or catheter
Mobility issues
All of our carers receive expert training in providing safe and secure mobility support, including helping you both get into and out of bed and move around your home and garden
Medication assistance
Sometimes it can be hard to keep track of what medication you need to take, and when to take it. A carer can help administer medication, as well as collecting prescriptions from the pharmacy.
Preparing meals
A carer can prepare the meals, snacks and drinks that you both enjoy, and at the times that suit you. They can even help you to follow a certain diet if needed.
Housekeeping
Your live-in carer will be able to help you both to stay on top of the chores and routines you’re struggling with – including vacuuming, laundry, tidying, wiping surfaces, and so much more
Running errands
If you’re struggling to run errands in a timely manner, such as stocking up the kitchen with food or posting letters, your carer can step in and help you out
Paying for palliative care
While most of our customers fund their care privately or via direct payments, if you’re funding care yourself, we do recommend that you first research whether any benefits are available to you. We’ve provided lots of advice here which may help.
There are savings and asset thresholds that will dictate how much of your care you have to pay for yourself, although it’s important to remember that for care within your own home, your property’s value is not taken into account.
You can ask your local council for a Financial Assessment to see if you qualify for help towards your care costs.
Amazing carers, delivering quality care in your home
We are committed to looking after our carers as much as we are looking after our customers. Being a carer is more than just a job.
