What is companionship care?
Enjoy the support of a trusted companion to boost your confidence and independence.
Sometimes care and support isn’t about a complex medical need or essential personal care tasks, but rather living the life that you want, doing the things you love and feeling as human as possible.
Companionship care is a type of home care service designed for individuals who may be at risk of loneliness or who have been experiencing loneliness for some time. A caregiver will visit the person’s home and spend time with them, providing company and emotional support.
Your companion can help with:
General companionship
Your companion is there to be a friendly face and provide fun, compassionate companionship throughout the week
Cooking your favourite meals
A companion can prepare your favourite meals for you at the times that you decide, and can also sit and share the meal with you
Help with your weekly shopping
If you’re finding you need a bit of extra assistance with the shopping, a companion can either collect it for you or accompany you to the shops
Helping with travel arrangements
Travelling long distances can seem a daunting prospect, but your companion can help you plan your journey – as well as accompanying you
Assistance with domestic tasks
As well as providing friendly companionship, your carer can also help out around the home with domestic tasks such as cleaning and laundry
Ensuring your comfort at home
Whether they’re plumping your pillows, adjusting the heating or tidying things up, your companion can help ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed

Companionship services for young people
Companionship services can be a great option for those over 18, including younger adults.
Going through personal or physical changes in life can often be overwhelming, but our companionship carers double up as physical support, and a friend when you need them. Companionship services can be a vital source of support for young people during what can often be a very busy and unpredictable period of a person’s life.
Here are some ways a companion can help young people:
Practical help at home
Companionship carers can also help out around the home with anything from preparing meals to sorting out laundry
Helping with life changes
Moving house, starting a job or going to university can be very daunting. An assistant provides valuable emotional and practical support for every need.
Attending social events
Our personal assistants are all expertly trained carers who can provide compassionate, dedicated support wherever and whenever
Disability support
Helping Hands doesn’t see a disability or medical condition as a limitation. We’ll support you to live life on your terms, whatever that looks like.

What is the difference between a companion and a caregiver?
Whilst all of our carers are expertly trained to provide a wide range of support services to people with varying requirements, companionship care is a bit different from regular care.
With companionship care, rather than the focus being on supporting your practical needs, you’ll instead have a trusted companion who will be there to help you remain socially engaged in your own home – as well as accompanying you out and about to see friends and family or visit your favourite places.
Companionship care helps you to continue maintaining a happy, independent and stimulating lifestyle.

Companionship care FAQs
For an elderly person, a live-in companion can be both a source of valued friendship and essential practical support. If your elderly loved one is living alone, a live-in companionship carer can provide round-the-clock elderly care and security whilst also being a trusted friend.
Companionship care can be a great option for elderly people who would simply benefit from having someone to talk to or share their hobbies with throughout the week. Whether it’s stopping by for a cup of tea and a chat, or helping you get out and about, our friendly companions can enable your independence.
Whilst companionship care doesn’t exclusively have to involve companionship, the main aim of it is generally to provide emotional support, whilst personal care is more aimed at providing physical support services such as bathing, toileting, dressing and medical help.
