How to choose a home care provider in Bradford

Questions to ask a home care provider

When you’re considering home care you need to ask questions of any potential provider to ensure that they will meet your expectations. Key questions include ‘what services do you provide’, ‘are your staff qualified’, and ‘how much does it cost’. We provide information on our home care services as well as costs and funding which will give you and idea of what you will need to pay. You should also ask about care planning processes, what happens in an emergency, and how the company handles unexpected changes to your condition.

CQC ratings explained

Not all are companies are Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) regulated. However, all of our 155 branches are fully overseen by regulators, meaning you and your loved ones can have complete trust in us. The CQC say: “We work with health and care providers and wider care systems to improve the quality and equity of care. We set clear, evidence-based expectations, and we identify and respond to risk early.”

Red flags to watch for

Some home care providers are not regulated, especially those described as ‘agencies’. Care agencies focus on charging a fee to find you a self-employed carer, or worse, they expect you to employ them yourself. You may also be subject to hidden fees and additional charges that you weren’t anticipating.

At Helping Hands, we manage every aspect of your care package, from the moment you first join us. You’ll have a local care manager who will coordinate everything for you and be on hand if you need to query anything. We employ our own carers so there’s no need to worry about who’s handling their paperwork, and we’ll keep everything transparent so there are no unexpected surprises.

Why carer continuity matters

Continuity is essential with home care, especially if you’re living with a condition such as dementia. This is because continual changes to your routine can cause confusion and anxiety, leading to a potential worsening of your condition. In any circumstances continuity is important though, as it ensures you remain in control of your care delivery and know that your routine will run seamlessly. If your carer is delayed for instance, we’ll give you a call and let you know, we won’t just leave you hanging on, wondering when someone’s going to arrive.

FAQs:

What should I look for in a home care agency?

You need to ensure that the home care company you approach have the same values at heart as you do. At Helping Hands, we believe that delivering care is a privilege, and because we’ve been doing so since 1989, we are also highly experienced. Finding a company with an established record of care delivery is the most important thing, with excellent Trustpilot reviews and motivated carers.

What is a good CQC rating?

The CQCs assessment framework is made up of five key questions, underscored by quality statements. They ask all health and social care services if they are safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs, and well-led. Based on those assessments they produce a score, which is categorised as inadequate, requires improvement, good, or outstanding. We’re proud of the amount of high ratings we receive on our CQC inspections.

How do I check a provider’s CQC rating?

We display our CQC ratings on all of our branch pages (except for new branches that are yet to be assessed), but you can also go to the CQC website and type in the company you are looking for. You can also do the same on the CIW website for services in Wales.
