Once the site of a Roman villa, High Wycombe gets its name from the river Wye and the old English word for a wooded valley, "combe". Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, High Wycombe had a flourishing furniture manufacturing industry, and High Wycombe Museum is home to a number of pieces that were built during that period.
