Leading hourly visiting care and live-in homecare specialist Helping Hands brought their award winning training to families at the Greswolde Hotel in Solihull on Saturday 18th May to overwhelming success.
Hosted by Jayne Vale, the UK’s Dementia Personality of the year and Helping Hands’ resident dementia expert; families learnt how a loved one is likely to experience living with the various forms of Dementia, and how they can help. It was also a great opportunity for families to chat to others who are in similar circumstances.
One family member commented, “it has given me a better understanding of the condition and how I can adjust my behavior to make things easier.” Another family member said, “I can now visit my mum and still feel that she’s my mum.”
With over 50% of Helping Hands’ customers living with Dementia it became evident that the quality of information given to families from healthcare professionals is inconsistent and often poor. Hence in 2012, Helping Hands, which has been providing live in carers in people’s homes for 24 years, formally launched its first Dementia Family Day to rave reviews and pleas to roll out the training nationwide. A Solihull based healthcare professional who also attended the event is looking into how the training could be expanded to the wider Solihull community. He said, “It’s the best awareness training I have ever had.”
Helping Hands is holding a further event in Warwick on Saturday 6th July 2013.
