Travels with my carer: Charlotte and her trip to Australia

A dream holiday to Australia for one of our customers, Charlotte, is about to become a reality. Charlotte is an incredible person who is living with cerebral palsy. After her parents sadly passed away, Charlotte was left with some money for a trip of a lifetime, something which her live-in carer, Irma, was only too willing to help arrange.

Six weeks travelling Down Under

This month, Charlotte and Irma will have a six-week Australian adventure, beginning in Brisbane. They will fly from Heathrow to Brisbane, with a stop-over in Abu Dhabi, then experience everything that Brisbane has to offer. They will even have the chance to see whales in their natural habitat on a whale-watching excursion!

Charlotte and Irma are not just staying in one place, however. They will also get the chance to experience other parts of Australia, such as:

• Staying in Brisbane for seven nights
• Seeing the Great Barrier Reef from the comfort of a semi-submersible
• Take in the sights of Sydney and the Blue Mountains
• Experience the wonders of Ayers Rock
• Relax on a river cruise starting in Perth

Charlotte’s family reunion

There is also a more personal reason for Charlotte and Irma’s adventure Down Under. Though they are both excited about the chance to see some of Australia’s wonders, Charlotte will be meeting some of her long-distance relatives during her stay, and Irma will be right by her side to help her with anything she needs. The two have already connected with the support of our Head of Clinical Care.

“Charlotte is such a lovely person and I’m sure she’ll have a wonderful time,” she says. “After chatting to her about her hopes and aspirations for the journey, I introduced Charlotte to Irma, who has a lot of experience and a loving personality. I sent Charlotte Irma’s carer profile and from there, arranged a Skype chat between the two so they could start to get to know each other. They then met up with tea and cakes which Charlotte made specially and the two have just clicked!”

Meeting the carer for the first time

After being contacted by accessible worldwide travel specialist Travel Counsellors, we first met with Charlotte some time ago to find out what she would need from her carer. She selected Irma not just based on the wealth of experience she brings to her care work, but also her caring and loving personality. Irma had already been trained by Helping Hands and the large team of clinical nurse specialists, and combines this with her passion for travelling and helping people. This made her an ideal fit for Charlotte and the two are now preparing for their adventure.

Travelling with a live-in carer

Helping our customers to have new, wonderful experiences and do something which brings them joy is one of the most rewarding parts of our care. Why not have a read of some our other heart-warming stories, or to learn more about clinical care.

Irma will be blogging about their travels together. Keep watching this space for her updates on their trip Down Under. On behalf of everyone at Helping Hands, we would like to wish them a safe and enjoyable journey!
