Mobility aids and home adaptation assessments
We assess all of our customers’ needs, including any changes needed in the home.
Your home is your kingdom, and we want to help you keep it that way. That’s why we place an emphasis on ensuring a safe home, with the equipment needed to maintain your independence. We work with our customers, social services and occupational therapists to gauge, advise and gain access to equipment.
In complex health care cases, we are also instrumental in helping our customers and their families plan room layouts and even extensions that are submitted for planning permission. Our aim is to make home care living achievable, finding innovative ways of moving around a space whilst maximising independence.

The benefits of staying at home for care
We’re firm believers that home is the best place to receive the care you need. That’s why we’ll help you make all the necessary home adaptations you require to continue living there.
There are numerous brilliant benefits to remaining at home to receive the support you require, rather than moving to a residential nursing home or hospice. Here are just some of the ways in which home care can be advantageous:
See family and friends
With support from a carer, family and friends can concentrate on spending quality time with you, whenever you like
Continue living with pets
Being able to stay in your own home means your beloved pets can remain at your side, where they belong
Care that suits your needs
You’ll receive a support package that is fully tailored to your personal needs at all times, and can be adapted accordingly
Maintain your routines
You’ll be able to maintain all your normal daily and weekly routines, and eat meals at the times that suit you
Keep up your hobbies
Whether you love being in the garden, going for walks, playing games or watching a great film, you can keep up your favourite hobbies
Enjoy familiar surroundings
You’ll be able to continue enjoying all the familiar sights, smells and sounds that you get to experience at home
Taking care of the people that care for you
Our wonderful carers are the reason we’re trusted by so many families to provide care and companionship to people who need support.
We directly employ every one of our carers and regularly train, support and reward them so they can continue to deliver the best care.

Mobility Aids & Home Adaptations FAQs
Costs can vary widely when it comes to mobility aids and home adaptations. For instance, a second-hand stairlift for straight stairs may only cost you around £1500, whereas a brand-new one for a curved staircase could cost around £6000! It’s always worth talking to the occupational therapy team at your local authority as they will be able to carry out an assessment of needs and you may be able to receive help with the cost of some aids and adaptations.
Mobility aids vary widely and have different uses. Some aids are designed for mobility, such as rollators, Zimmer frames, and walkers, whereas others are used for safe sitting, such as perching stools, and shower chairs. Hoists are widely used inside people’s homes too, for lifting people safely out of a chair, bed, or bath. Walkers are often designed for dual use, with waterproof seats, handles and wheels, so they can be used both inside and outside. Mobility scooters tend to be used outdoors, to enable people with limited mobility to go distances independently.
While Helping Hands does not rent or sell mobility aids or home adaptations, we work closely with our customers, social services and occupational therapists to gauge, advise and gain access to equipment. We will support you to use equipment that appears in your care plan. Our carers go through an extensive training programme to make sure they understand how to safely use the equipment that you have in your home. They will be observant and notice if any equipment is no longer suitable and know who to report this to so that you always remain safe. They will work seamlessly with your occupational therapy team so that your equipment continues to suit your needs.
