Edmonton was once a small rural village, but after the railway arrived in the 19th century the area expanded rapidly. Later in the century industry was established on former marshland which encouraged larger amounts of workers to move into the area. In the 20th century the area had become a popular shopping destination and in the 1970s underwent a major redevelopment. It is now a lively, multicultural community with an ethnically diverse population.
