Creating Privacy and Boundaries with an Overnight Carer

Creating Privacy and Boundaries with an Overnight Carer

Why Privacy Can Feel Different During Overnight Care

You may be familiar with overnight care, or you may be considering it for the first time, but whatever your circumstances, the question of privacy always factors in people’s minds; what will it feel like having a stranger staying overnight in my house? Thankfully, Helping Hands carers quickly become friends, thanks to their compassionate natures and discreet care delivery.

Having Someone Stay in Your Home After Dark

You may need to be turned regularly or just wish for the reassurance of another person in your house overnight. Having someone providing physical and emotional reassurance can be priceless.

Sharing Living Spaces in Your Home Overnight

Our carers are highly discreet professionals, and they will ensure you always feel like your house is your own. They’ll never overstep boundaries or make you feel uncomfortable at home.

Emotional Adjustment to Night-Time Support

Things can seem more difficult at night and it’s when difficulties can seem magnified. Having someone there may make the dark hours pass more calmly, whether you’re asleep or awake.

Setting Clear Expectations Before Overnight Care Begins

We will always develop a personalised plan of support for you before we begin providing a service. We will discuss things at length with you – or your advocate – to ensure that you know what to expect before your overnight care begins.

Agreeing on Sleeping Arrangements

Your carer will require their own bedroom if they are permanently living in with you, however this isn’t the case if they’re remaining awake, although they will need access to other facilities.

Defining Access to Rooms and Facilities

Your home remains your own and you have the right to decide who goes in which room. However, having a carer awake all night will mean they’ll require access to a toilet, and refreshment facilities.

Establishing Night-Time Routines

You always decide your own routine with Helping Hands, and you know what times you wish to be asleep and when you need to be awake. We’ll work around this and so will your carer.

Discussing Personal Preferences

It’s important that we plan your care as much as possible, but we also understand that things can change without notice. That’s why your package of care will always remain flexible to your changing needs.

Maintaining Privacy During Waking and Sleeping Night Care

Your privacy and dignity is of the highest priority when we’re providing your care at home. We’ll always respect your privacy; only coming into the room if you wish us to, or if your care plan dictates it. We’ll also respect the rest of your home and leave it exactly as we found it.

The Difference Between Waking and Sleeping Nights

For waking nights or sitting care, your carer will arrive around 9pm and stay for approximately 10 hours. For sleeping nights, your carer will more than likely already be living with you in your home as a live-in carer.

Protecting Personal Space During Night-Time Checks

Your carer will check on you regularly, for instance if you need to be turned regularly due to spinal injury. They will also respect your personal space and keep your home clean and tidy.

Managing Bathroom Access and Personal Care at Night

With waking nights, your carer will stay awake for the whole night so that they’re able to provide personal care when you need it. Your carer will also require access to a bathroom while in your home.

Communicating Boundaries Respectfully

Our carers are experienced professionals, with compassionate and empathetic natures. They will follow your support plan and respect your personal space, so you don’t have to worry that having someone you don’t know in your house will be awkward. Besides, they’ll quickly become a familiar visitor, and maybe even a friend.

Raising Concerns in a Timely Manner to Keep You Safe at Home

If you or your loved ones have any concerns about your care, you can contact your local care manager or our friendly customer care team. Your carer will also pass concerns about your condition onto their manager, or your wider healthcare team.

Involving the Care Provider in Adjustments

If you have a community healthcare team who are visiting you regularly then your carer will slot seamlessly into that provision. This will ensure that changes in your care are communicated quickly and effectively to all those who look after you.

Reviewing the Overnight Care Plan if Needed

We will regularly review your care plan to ensure that it is delivering all of the care you need. Equally, if you or a loved one feels something needs to change, you can talk to us. It’s always focused on you and keeping you as comfortable as possible.

Creating a Comfortable and Safe Overnight Environment

We will work tirelessly to provide you with a comfortable and comforting environment overnight. By having someone in your home you can sleep soundly, knowing all of your needs will be taken care of if you wake up and require help.

Preparing a Suitable Resting Area for the Carer

With waking night care, your carer will remain awake to ensure you get the help you need, although they’ll be in a separate room to you. They’ll only be metres away though if you need help unexpectedly.

Securing Personal Belongings and Things You Value

You can trust our carers because we put them through a rigorous selection and screening process before we consider them for employment. We know all of our people well because we employ them directly.

Balancing Safety with Independence at All Times

While we’ll respect your independence and encourage you to be so, we’ll also make sure that you’re not attempting anything that’s unsafe. If our carers have concerns they’ll report them – keeping you protected.

How Helping Hands Supports Privacy During Overnight Care at Home

If you’re living with a complex condition, approaching the end of your life, or just need regular assistance around the clock, overnight care from Helping Hands can provide reassurance in two ways – sleeping nights and waking nights. If you don’t usually require help overnight then you’ll probably already have a live-in carer who will sleep when you do, although they’re nearby in the case of unexpected support needs.

Regardless of the type of support you require, our carers are friendly and competent professionals who will always put your privacy and dignity first.
