What Is Complex Care?

Complex care is person-centred support for people who have chronic or long-term health conditions. These include neurological disorders, brain and spinal injuries, and disabilities. We will mould visiting and live-in care around your requirements to help you manage your symptoms and daily tasks. Helping Hands are experts in complex care and have our own team of clinical nurses who manage all aspects of our complex care packages.

The Difference Between Complex Care and Standard Home Care in Manchester

Complex conditions can present challenges, whether mental, physical or emotional. Living with a complex condition can suggest your only option is to go into a nursing care home, however that isn’t the case. Our specialised nursing care is designed to address more complex clinical needs, and our local home care in Manchester team will work tirelessly to ensure you get to live as independently as possible at home. Complex care differs from general home care because it usually involves medical intervention of some kind, such as PEG feeding, catheter, or stoma maintenance.

Conditions We Support Through Complex Care

We support people living with many different complex conditions, and our carers are carefully trained in all the additional skills they’ll need to deliver exceptional care. We provide comprehensive care for people living with spinal injuries, MND, Parkinson’s, dementia, neurological conditions, and many other complex needs. Our carers receive additional training from our registered nurses once they’re with their customer, ensuring they are confident and knowledgeable with their customer’s specific needs.

Our Clinical Complex Care Services in Manchester

We provide visiting, live-in, and respite care in and around Manchester, designed around our customers’ specific needs.
Visiting care can be delivered from as little as 30 minutes per week, meaning that we can tailor the service around you as little and often as you need us. Some people have visiting care to take pressure off family members, who can then take a break when the carers attend. Keeping your own routine and enjoying companionship means that your practical and emotional needs are met.
Live-in care means you’ll have a dedicated carer living in your home with you. Trained specifically to meet your needs, your live-in carer will ensure you’re never alone around the clock, providing additional reassurance for you and your loved ones. You get to select a live-in carer who most closely meets your needs, meaning peace of mind and satisfaction for you.
Respite care is short-term support to ensure you remain supported, while your carer takes a scheduled or unexpected break. You may also require respite care after a hospital stay or to help you back to your usual level of health and independence.

Who Is Complex Care Suitable For?

Complex care is suitable for people living with a condition or disability that requires additional medical support. Our complex care can look after people who’ve experienced brain injuries or who live with learning disabilities, meaning you get to live life on your own terms. Complex care includes practical tasks like personal care, medication administration, manual handling, and mobility support; while also ensuring you get to enjoy a social life, and spend quality time with the people who matter to you.

Complex Care at Home vs. a Specialist Care Facility in Manchester

Finding the right care provider for your family can take time, but one thing is for certain: if your loved one wants to remain at home, they can.
Live-in care from Helping Hands serves as a viable alternative to residential care, and here’s why:

You can remain in the comfort of your own home

You have full control over your mealtimes and preferences

One-to-one, 24-hour care from your own dedicated carer

You can continue with your preferred lifestyle and routines

Your friends and family can visit as much as you wish

How Our Complex Care Works

Receiving complex care from Helping Hands is easy to design around you. Contacting us can be done online, over the phone or in-person at your local branch, which begins the process. One of our managers then comes to your home and assesses your needs, while ensuring that your home is a suitable place for our carers to work.

Our Specialist Complex Care Team in Manchester

Our amazing carers are the true heart and soul of Helping Hands. Our local care team in Manchester are dedicated to promoting the independence and comfort of all of their customers and work tirelessly to ensure they live as well as possible at home. We carefully choose the people who come to work for us, making sure that they share our ethos for kindness in everything we do. While we relish our carers’ experience, we are happy to have people who’ve never worked in care before, as long as they have the desire to care for other people at heart. We build on their existing knowledge and provide a personalised development programme for every carer who joins us.

Technology and Equipment Support Within Complex Care

Our team of clinical nurses have years of medical experience and expertise and will ensure that – whatever equipment you need for your care – your carer understands how it’s used and how to safely operate it. Sometimes it wouldn’t be safe for one carer to operate certain types of equipment, which is where we’ll ensure they have additional support, as laid out in your care plan. Whether you need feeding tubes, catheters, hoists, or equipment to help you breath, we’ll understand it and we’ll be able to help.

Complex Care Funding and Costs in Manchester

Your local authority should be the first people you contact if you need help paying for your care. They’ll carry out a needs assessment and a financial assessment, which will decide if you have to contribute to the costs of your care. If you are eligible for assistance this can be in the form of direct payments. Helping Hands can advise you on paying for your care, and we’ll always design you a personalised quote. We accept private funding and direct payments to pay for the care services you receive.

Our live-in care begins at £1,675 per week for an individual, while for a couple it begins at £2,125 per week. We also offer live-in respite care from £345 per day. Visiting care costs from £32.40 per hour, plus a callout charge of £4.50 per visit.

NHS Continuing Healthcare and Complex Care Funding

According to the NHS, “Some people with long-term complex health needs qualify for free health and social care arranged and funded solely by the NHS. This is known as NHS continuing healthcare.”

Unlike local authority care funding, NHS continuing healthcare is not means tested. If it’s decided that you have a case for NHS continuing healthcare funding, you will be assessed by an Integrated Care Board (ICB), then have an assessment carried out by a doctor, nurse, social worker, or another healthcare professional. These will usually be people not directly involved in your ongoing care. If your condition is deteriorating or you’re deemed to be at end of life, your needs will be fast-tracked – usually within 48 hours.
