What Is Supported Living?

Supported living helps people with disabilities retain their independence at home. It also supports them to fully access their local community and to enjoy activities and attend appointments. Helping Hands offer support, from a single visit a week up to around the clock care. Some people find that the reassurance of having someone else living in their home with them, as a personal assistant or carer, makes a  huge difference to their everyday life, and also reassures their loved ones.

The Difference Between Supported Living and Residential Care in Mansfield

It can be difficult to admit you need additional support, especially if all you can imagine is leaving your beloved home and going into residential care. Helping Hands enable you to continue living in the place you know best however, meaning you remain in control of your life and get to spend your days exactly as you wish. Having care at home means you decide when you get up, what you eat, and how you spend your spare time; you’ll never have to wait until someone is ready to help you.

Who Is Supported Living Suitable For?

We never use a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to our care delivery. Supported living helps people with mild to severe learning disabilities, spinal injuries, and with many other conditions to live as independently as possible. From the first moment you or a loved one gets in touch with us we’ll look after you; guiding you through the process and assessing your needs thoroughly. We’ll listen carefully and ensure that you understand every aspect of your care plan.

Conditions and Needs We Support Through Supported Living in Mansfield

We support people with conditions ranging from the mildest through to the most complex. We support people every day who have spinal injuries, neurological conditions, other physical infirmities, and mental disabilities. We also support people who just wish to have companionship, sometimes after the passing of a loved one, are reassured by having someone in their home overnight, or need some help to manage their household.

Types of Supported Living Available

Visiting care can be delivered from just an hour a week, perhaps to give your loved ones a break, or because you can manage most of your routine yourself. We can also deliver multiple visits throughout the day for you, overnight, and at weekends.

Live-in care means you’ll have a carer living in your home around the clock with you. This can give additional support with household tasks, personal care, and essentially, companionship; you’ll never have a chance to become lonely with love-in care.

Respite care is short-term support that can be delivered on either a visiting or live-in basis, perhaps because your regular carer needs to take a break, or because you need additional support temporarily.

Promoting Independence Through Supported Living

It can seem that going into residential care may be the obvious first choice if you’re not managing at home, however why leave the place you love when you don’t have to? While you may be nervous at the thought of someone you don’t know coming into your home, you and your loved ones can be reassured that all Helping Hands carers are screened through the Disclosure and Barring Service and have their references thoroughly checked. This means that the people coming into your home are suitable to be there, and will be dedicated to helping you live as well as possible.

Our Expert Supported Living Team in Mansfield

Our wonderful carers are the heart and soul of Helping Hands, and our local care team in Mansfield are dedicated to their customers’ wellbeing. We select the very best people to work for us, based on their personal qualities, as we believe that it’s more important for our carers to truly care for others, than it is for them to have years of experience. That’s not to say that our carers aren’t experienced, but we build on their knowledge to ensure that they have all the skills to undertake their roles expertly.

Local Authority and Council Funding for Supported Living

If you are looking for assistance to pay care costs you should contact your local council and ask for a needs assessment. As part of the assessment, they will also carry out a financial assessment, which will decide how much – if anything – you have to contribute to the costs of your care.

Personal Budgets & Direct Payments: If you are eligible, you will receive a personal budget from the council to be spent on your care and support needs. Depending on your abilities, the council may manage this budget for you, or you will receive Direct Payments for you to pay for your own care.

Helping Hands accepts Direct Payments or privately funded individuals.
