About the British Heart Foundation

The team behind the British Heart Foundation is composed of PhD students, clinicians and professors specialising in cardiac surgery, cardiovascular sciences, molecular cardiology and congenital heart surgery, to name a few. All of the British Heart Foundation’s medical expert team are invested in the ground-breaking research that takes place at the British Heart Foundation.

Over the years, the British Heart Foundation has funded research that has since gone on to transform the knowledge and treatment of heart attacks, heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm, congenital heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and vascular dementia.

As an example, in the 1960s, heart attacked patients were prescribed bed rest and pain relief – until Desmond Julian, BHF Professor of Cardiology at the Freeman Hospital (1974 – 1986), proposed coronary care units.

In the early 1960s, few heart attack patients survived a cardiac arrest, until the British Heart Foundation funded equipment for Dr Julian to set up his own coronary care unit with now BHF Professor Michael Oliver.

From the research that went into coronary care units and their implementation, the annual number of deaths from heart attacks in the UK has more than halved.

To this day, the British Heart Foundation is pioneered by medical and scientific experts to continue to deliver life saving research into heart and circulatory conditions.

Here at Helping Hands, we are proud to have partnered with the British Heart Foundation as of July 2021 to support their ground-breaking research into beating heartbreak forever.

This partnership will see Helping Hands commit to raising £60,000 in celebration of the charity’s 60th anniversary year.
