Here at Helping Hands, our people are at the heart of what we do. From our wonderful carers who are out every single day supporting families across England and Wales, through to our management teams, people are what make us who we are.

Last week, we dropped on two of our carers who have been shining examples of what care is all about, complete with flowers and certificates.

Maureen exceeds in listening & understanding

Maureen joined our team of live-in carers in the spring of 2017 and has been an instant hit with her customers. She works to understand exactly what they expect from her and how she can meet these needs.

On her most recent placement, Maureen was described as “the best carer yet” by the family – a true testament to her ability to listen and understand. She and her current customer both share a love of opera and Maureen loves hearing his tales of when he was at university. They’re more than carer and customer – they’re good friends too.

The customer’s family had previously had problems with carers in the past. But with her kind and caring personality, Maureen quickly earned their trust. After just three days, the family got in touch with us to say how pleased they were with the hard work Maureen was doing.

Before surprising Maureen with her certificate, our Director of Operations Karen Lewis, explained, “It struck me just how much Maureen had impacted positively on her customers’ lives. It’s really touching that one of our customers felt that Maureen had become part of their family.”

Vicky awarded for focussing on people

As a dedicated private carer, Vicky loves helping people to achieve their goals no matter how big or small. She enjoys being involved in the activities that give her customers happiness, even taking customers out for the day to the zoo or the beach.

Vicky, far left, has become a part of her customer’s family.

Vicky’s dedication was clear for the whole of Cardiff to see when she helped a customer in a wheelchair to walk across the finish line at the Cardiff Memory Walk. The customer’s daughter later told us that her mother is “very happy… and well-looked after.”

Another family who Vicky has supported also praised her knowledge and understanding. “The way Vicky has spoken to and managed Mum has made a huge difference to Mum’s state of mind and general wellbeing,” they told us. “This is what we need and want for Mum.”

Karen Rayfield, Director of People and Performance, presented Vicky with her award. “Vicky is a true asset to Helping Hands and her commitment to her customers never fails to amaze us,” she said.

“There’s nothing that Vicky wouldn’t do for those in her care and it’s really heart-warming to see how much of difference she makes in their lives.”
