Visiting care and home care in Houghton Regis

Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Houstone, Houghton Regis is a Bedfordshire town, near Luton. Bordered by the Chiltern Hills, the once small village became a ‘London overspill’ in the 1950s and 60s, causing it to develop massively. Some of the original village characteristics can be recognised in the names of local roads, such as ‘Tithe Farm’. Local industries that are no longer in production include straw plaiting, which in 1689 caused local workers to demonstrate against a bill requiring people to wear woollen hats, claiming it threatened their industry.

Helping Hands are long-established in the care industry, although we can’t claim a history as far back as the 17th century! We were, however, established in 1989 to deliver exceptional care for people in their own homes. Our visiting and live-in care services are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission and the Care Inspectorate Wales, so you and your loved ones can have full confidence in our services.

Why Helping Hands is better than a care agency in Houghton Regis

We aren’t and have never been a care agency. We’re a private home care company who takes great pride in the distinction that offers. A care agency will usually only offer a skeleton service – charging you to ‘match’ with a carer and then leaving you to take charge of everything else. With Helping Hands though we fully manage every aspect of your care experience, as well as employing your carer directly, rather than expecting them to be self-employed. This gives them more security in their work and makes them more motivated in their daily role.

Qualified carers providing a variety of care services in Houghton Regis

Our company was built on kindness, and our carers are the best representation of that. We only choose the most compassionate and empathetic people to join us because we know that our carers are the beating heart of Helping Hands, out in all weathers caring for people in their own homes and keeping them as independent as possible. We recruit, assess, and teach our people ourselves, feeling it’s far too important to entrust to an outside organisation. That’s how we can build our local teams and know that we’re always delivering the most exceptional, consistent standards of care.

    FAQs

Home care in Houghton Regis is professional support provided in your own home, helping you or a loved one stay safe, comfortable and independent without needing to move into residential care. It can be arranged as regular visiting care, occasional support, respite care, or full-time live-in care, depending on your needs.

With Helping Hands, care is built around your routine, so support can include anything from help getting up in the morning to companionship, meal preparation, medication prompts, mobility support and personal care.

Home care can include a wide range of practical, personal and emotional support. This may include help with washing, dressing, toileting, medication prompts, preparing meals, light housework, shopping, attending appointments, mobility support and companionship.

Care can be flexible, from short visits during the week to several visits a day or live-in care. The right level of support will depend on your needs, routines and preferences.

A carer can help with everyday tasks that have become difficult to manage alone. This might include getting in and out of bed, washing and dressing, preparing meals, moving safely around the home, taking medication, keeping the house tidy, going shopping, attending appointments or simply having someone there for companionship.

The aim is to provide the right amount of support while helping you maintain independence, dignity and confidence at home.

The cost of home care in Houghton Regis depends on the type and amount of support you need. Helping Hands’ visiting care prices currently start from £32.40 per hour, with visits available from 30 minutes, and live-in care currently starts from £1,675 per week for one person. A call-out or travel charge may also apply.

Because everyone’s needs are different, the best way to get an accurate price is to arrange a care assessment. This helps create a tailored care plan and a clear breakdown of costs before care begins.

Home care can be cheaper than a care home, especially if you only need support for part of the day or a few times a week. Age UK says privately arranged home care can cost around £25 per hour, while residential care averages around £949 per week and nursing home care around £1,267 per week, although costs vary by area and needs.

For people who need round-the-clock support, live-in care may be closer in cost to residential care, but it allows you to remain in your own home, keep familiar routines and receive one-to-one support.

Yes. Helping Hands states that its service is regulated by the Care Quality Commission, or CQC, in England and the Care Inspectorate Wales, or CIW, in Wales. These regulators monitor care providers to make sure they meet required standards for safety, quality and care delivery.

Individual branch ratings can vary, so it is always worth checking the relevant local branch profile when arranging care in Houghton Regis.

Home care in Houghton Regis can often be arranged quickly, depending on your needs, location and carer availability. In many cases, care can begin within a few days, and urgent support may be possible sooner following an assessment.

The first step is usually a conversation about your situation, followed by a care assessment and a personalised care plan. This helps make sure the right support is in place from the start.
