Welfare Checks for the Elderly
Our Welfare Check Services
Welfare checks for elderly people can be described as making sure that someone vulnerable has their needs met, however that may be. In extreme cases the person may appear to be in immediate risk, which is when social services or the police may need to step in. Age UK says “If there’s an immediate risk of harm, call the emergency services on 999. If you’re very concerned about someone’s health or welfare but don’t think it’s an emergency, call 111 for NHS advice, 24 hours a day.”
If the person has mental capacity, it can be difficult to determine if calling on their behalf would breach their data protection, but you can ask for advice if you’re not sure. If it is not urgent, you can contact the local council and raise a concern with their adult safeguarding team, but you should have the person’s consent if possible.
One way to ensure that your loved one is never alone or has daily company is visiting or live-in care from Helping Hands. We can provide welfare checks by spending time with your loved one throughout the day or by residing in their home with them around the clock.
Benefits of Welfare Checks for the Elderly
When you have care at home from Helping Hands, your welfare is our priority. One of the ways that we monitor people’s welfare is by regularly going into their homes and undertaking household and personal care tasks, on an agreed schedule with the person and their loved ones. Many of our customers require support with housework, laundry and general housekeeping, whereas others need help with their personal care, meal preparation, medication or mobility. We can ensure that the person also receives vital companionship regularly so that isolation and loneliness are minimised. Loneliness and social isolation can have a detrimental affect on a person’s wellbeing, so by having carers going into their home regularly they get the interaction they need, whether it’s having a cuppa and a chat, doing a puzzle together or singing favourite songs.
Key Areas of Welfare Checks
It’s imperative to check that the person is having the difficulties that you’ve perceived before acting on them. From outside it can appear that someone is struggling, but in actual fact they are managing in a slightly different way. It will probably become obvious if someone isn’t looking after themselves, whether they’re losing weight, not taking care of their hygiene, or their health is generally degrading. Age UK gives a timely warning: “Before trying to help, it’s best to be clear about what the problem is. Sometimes there’s a really simple solution to a problem; for example, someone isn’t eating properly because they’re finding it too difficult to get to the shops.” Everyone lives differently and conduct their lives in a way that others might not, so we shouldn’t force our way of life on someone just because it’s different to ours. Age UK agrees, “it’s important to have that conversation and not make assumptions.”
Why Choose Helping Hands?
Helping Hands is the UK’s most trusted home care provider because we’ve been delivering exceptional support in our customers’ homes since 1989. We recruit the most compassionate people to work for us, people who have caring for others at heart and who are dedicated to delivering care and companionship to the customers’ specifications. We have experience with supporting many different conditions; people who are living with dementia, spinal injuries, MND, cancer, and general age-related frailties. We’re flexible enough to accommodate any needs, and we’ll always design your care around you; we’ve never believed in ‘one size fits all.’ The majority of our customers have physical care needs due to age-related frailties or a serious condition, such as needing assistance with their personal care or mobility, housekeeping or nutrition. Our customers who have lost a beloved partner or are struggling with living alone also value the companionship that their carer can bring, whether on an intermittent visiting basis or living with them around the clock.
How Much Do Welfare Checks Cost?
Our visiting, live-in and respite care is all competitively priced, however we also believe that there are aspects of home care that can’t be measured in monetary terms alone. These include being able to remain living in the place that means the world to our customers, continuing to live with family members and precious pets, and surrounded by memories of a life well-lived.
We’ll devise a personalised quote for you once we get to know you better, and the costs will depend on the amount of care you require, your condition, and where in the UK you live. However, as a rough idea, the following prices apply:
Visiting Care
Visiting Care begins at £31.00 per hour, plus a call-out charge of £4.50 per visit.
Live-in Care
Live-in Care starts from £1,650 per week for an individual and £1,650 for a couple.
Respite Care
Respite Care can be delivered from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the person’s needs. Prices begin at £275 per day for live-in respite care.
