Loneliness and its impact
Loneliness is a growing concern amongst the elderly. According to the NHS “older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation and it can have a serious effect on health.” It affects individuals in various ways, some may start to lose their appetite and refuse to eat, or it can lead to obesity. It can also contribute to heart disease and high blood pressure.
There are many reasons why people can feel lonely or socially isolated. According to the NHS, this can be due to “getting older or weaker, no longer being the hub of their family, leaving the workplace, the deaths of spouses and friends, or through disability and illness.”
The Campaign to End Loneliness states that “loneliness puts individuals at greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia.” While Justice in Motion states it can lead to “depression, anxiety, disrupted sleep and stress.” With these concerns, it’s no wonder so many family members are turning to care to ensure that someone is by their loved one’s side.
What is companionship care?
Companionship care is exactly what it says on the tin – carers that provide companionship to help tackle loneliness. Individuals don’t necessarily need to be living with a condition to receive care. If they are living alone and simply need a bit of company, this can be delivered via companionship care.
Perhaps individuals need help with food shopping, someone to chat to while having tea, or a chess buddy. Whatever the reason, companionship care can provide individuals the comfort they need, so they don’t feel alone. All our packages are flexible, so when our customer’s needs and requirements change, our care plans can be amended to fulfil their needs.
Companionship care can be provided on a visiting or live-in care basis and can make a huge difference in people’s lives. Plus, they can continue to enjoy the things they love to do with a little support along the way.
What are the benefits of companion care?
Providing companionship for individuals can make a lasting impression on our customers and their families. Some people go for several days without speaking to someone. Having someone visit regularly can impact an individual’s physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, regular conversation and keeping their mind active can decrease the risk of depression and cognitive decline.
Carers can also take individuals out into the community, which allows them to explore the outdoors and interact with other people. This is a beneficial way of boosting their confidence and independence. Carers can also assist customers to phone or video call their loved ones using smart devices, so they can continue to keep in contact with their friends and family.
Companionship care also provides loved ones peace of mind knowing that their family member or friend is being well looked after. Especially if they don’t live close by or are unable to visit often.
