Community Care

What is Community Care?

Community care, also known as care in the community, is a policy of deinstitutionalisation, which involves treating and caring for people within their own home. Services vary depending on who is delivering the care and what your needs are, however private carers will come to your home and carry out the support you need to ensure you live as comfortably as possible. Care may be funded by the local council or you may have to fund the care yourself, depending on your financial status and the results of a care needs assessment.

What is a Community Care Assessment?

According to the NHS, a Care Assessment helps to understand “how you’re managing everyday tasks like washing, dressing and cooking.” The assessment is designed so that any help you may need with such tasks can be identified and support planned.

A council employee such as a social worker or occupational therapist will carry out the assessment with you which will last approximately an hour, either face to face or over the phone. If you or your loved ones think you are in need of extra support at home then it’s important to ask for a care assessment to ensure you get the help you require. This could include having equipment installed in your home such as a walk-in shower, providing you with a walking frame or personal alarm, enabling you to access day centres and other community facilities or having a professional carer come to your home.

If you would prefer to have a needs assessment from a private homecare company, Helping Hands can oblige. Talk to our customer care team or your local branch to discover how we can assess your needs and design you a bespoke care package to suit your lifestyle and requirements.

Who is Community Care For?

Community care is for anyone who is struggling with everyday tasks, such as washing, dressing, housework, preparing meals or mobility, and generally requires a level of extra support in their own home. This could be at any age, not just older people, and may be because of a pre-existing condition, accident, illness or age-related frailty. Helping Hands can provide community care on a visiting or live-in basis, depending on your needs and preferences. Talk to our customer care team to learn more about care at home with us.
